Event month in Brighton

The month of May in Brighton is a busy one. Brighton Fringe is the biggest event with over 760 individual events spanning across the month. This includes 175 free events & over 3500 performances. Whether you are interested in music, theatre, live performances or children's activities there is something for everyone. As well as the Fringe there is also Brighton Festival, the Artists’ Open Houses and a whole range of unique events across the city. I thought I would list my highlights for this month.

Artists’ Open Houses

Weekends throughout May, 200 locations across Brighton and Hove. Free.

Throughout the month of May it is Brighton and Hove’s Artist Open Houses. There are over 1000 artists taking part and 200 open doors. This is a great opportunity to visit artists in their studios or homes and see a display of their work with the opportunity to buy original pieces from local artists. Art work ranges from paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, video, ceramics, glassware, textiles and jewellery. I haven’t been to any yet but there are some just around the corner and I will visit these at the weekend. That’s one of the great things about the open houses, you are sure to find some near you if you live in the Brighton & Hove area. For more information see the Artists' Open Houses website

Funk The Family Festival

Hove Park, 30th May 2015. Adults £18.50, Kids £8.50, Babies free, Family saver £49.50.

This is the event I’m most looking forward to, a day of fun for people of all ages. Funk the Family festival is a one day event taking part in Hove Park at the end of this month. The line up of music and entertainment looks fantastic and there couldn’t be more activities for kids in one place. This event was ranked in the top 10 of 775 events in the official Brighton Fringe guide. Entertainment for children includes Cirque du Funk, Clown Zaz, Little Lions Soft Play, Red Jelly Messy Play, a kids stage, face painting, the list goes on and on. My little boy is absolutely going to love it and I cannot wait either :) Lets hope the weather is nice. For tickets and more info see the Funk the Family website

Macbeth

Rialto Theatre, Dyke Road, Brighton. Runs daily until 15th May 2015. Tickets £8.

“Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's most famous and dark plays, has been adapted into this thrilling, blood-soaked romp of murder, betrayal and revenge. No punches are pulled as you follow Macbeth's journey from the witches cryptic prophesy all the way through to his eventual self destruction in the pursuit of power. All the great characters feature in his adaptation which promises to add a splash of classical theatre to this year's Brighton Fringe. But be careful and remember, there's daggers in men's smiles!”

I went to the see the debut yesterday at the quaint Rialto Cinema in Brighton. There was a slight hiccup because one of the cast members fainted and the director, Chris Lynch had to step in to play the part! However, I only found out about this after the performance and they did a really good job to cover it up as I wasn't aware at all. The performance includes fantastic costumes, a great cast, some scary interaction with the audience at the beginning, a gory production and, of course, a classic story. If Shakespeare is your thing check it out. See the C&D Productions website for more tickets and further info.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition

This is one of the biggest photography exhibitions of its kind, showcasing the worlds natural and most challenging pieces. If you didn't see the 2014 exhibition last year in London this is your chance to see it in the Brighton Museum. I took toddler along last week. The exhibition showcases the best wildlife images from around the globe, including some amazing close ups of animals and breathtaking landscapes of animal behaviour. There are also video displays and commentary. Every photograph tells a story and there is a full description and story for every image. Here are a couple of my favourite images which includes the winner of photographer of the year. See the Brighton Museums website for more information.
