We're going to Amsterdam!

We are going to Amsterdam tomorrow and I cannot wait! It feels like I've been waiting and planning this trip for ages and it's finally arrived, yay! People who read regularly will know I separated from my son's dad last year. The change hasn't been easy and some days I feel like I'm still finding my feet as a single parent. This will be my first trip travelling solo on a plane with my two year old, eek. I've worried about all the things that could potentially go wrong but now I'm just excited (and a little sleep deprived from the last couple of days). My son has been on a plane but not since he was a baby and he's been telling everyone he's very excited! We'll be spending some time by ourselves then have friends joining us over the weekend. I think it's a really nice balance actually, quality time with my boy then fun with friends.

There is so much to do and see in Amsterdam. I've been twice, both pre-baby but it also seems like an incredibly child-friendly city. Spring is a wonderful time to visit too because it's tulip season so they are in abundance around town. I love the thought of us strolling around the town, taking in the sights and enjoying the moment without rushing anywhere (see my recent Instagram post). Here are some of the things on our list. We won't have time to see them all but these are in my top ten (with a toddler).

  • Strolling around town including around the historical Jordaan area & nine streets
  • Taking one of the canal cruises

If we were there longer I'd also take a trip to the nearby flower strip where they grow 70 per cent of the world's commercial flower output! It's the perfect time of year to visit but it's an hour away from the centre so I think we'll have to leave that for another time. There's more than enough to keep us entertained though :-)

Have you been to Amsterdam? What would you recommend visiting?

  3. How exciting! Congrats and wishing you a comfortable flight! When I was living in Germany as a kid, I got to visit Amsterdam twice - once with my parents and once as a school field trip. A few years ago, my mom even lived and worked in Amsterdam.

  4. We have never been to Amsterdam but it looks lovely - I hope you and your boy have a great time and enjoy your first solo holiday. Am sure the plane journey will be just as exciting as he hopes, our son loved his first proper flight #brillblogposts

    1. Thanks very much. It's true, he loved the plane ride except the landing where he was sick! But the whole trip was just great :-)
