A guide to getting pregnant

I can’t believe Pip will be turning six soon! Time flies but at the same time, it feels like yesterday that I was counting days and dates in my diary wishing I was pregnant. It happened eventually but it did take a while and longer than I had expected! At the same time, I remember everyone around me seemingly getting pregnant instantly. Yes, there are couples who conceive at the drop of a hat but I know now, especially being a parent blogger and hearing so many stories, that a lot of people do struggle!

According to the NHS, 1 in 7 couples experience difficulty conceiving, affecting approximately 3.5 million people in the UK. Some people experience depression and isolation with the thought of nowhere to turn for advice or support. But there are support lines and organisations that can help. I hadn’t heard of the charity, Fertility Network UK until I started writing this blog post. They provide a free support line on 01213-235025 providing information and advice from a trained nurse.

Research suggests that out of 100 couples having regular, unprotected sex:

• 20 get pregnant within a month
• 70 get pregnant within 6 months
• 85 get pregnant within a year
• 90 get pregnant within 18 months
• 95 get pregnant in 2 years

Dr Fertility has recently compiled “The Couple’s Guide to Getting Pregnant” for couples who are thinking of starting a family or who have just started trying for a baby.

The guide offers the following 5 simple steps:

• Step 1 Prepare your bodies

• Step 2 Understand the best time for baby making

• Step 3 The fertility products you can use

• Step 4 How to maintain fun on your fertility journey

• Step 5 Knowing when it is time to see your doctor

I’ve read the full guide and it provides so many wonderful tips for preparing your bodies and helping you both on your fertility journey. The guide includes information on diet and fitness, taking vitamins and food supplements, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption and quitting smoking. Leading a healthier lifestyle can make your chances of conceiving higher. Along with the fantastic tips in the guide, Dr Fertility also sells a number of fertility products to help you to conceive. These include fertility monitors, fertility tests, fertility lubricants, dietary supplements and other fertility items.

My personal tip is to practice meditation! Meditation has been shown to reduce stress, depression, anxiety and pain and to increase peace and well-being. If you’re trying to conceive or even if you’re thinking of giving up, meditation and mindfulness help you to live in the moment and can lead you into a calm and relaxed state. I’ve been practising for years now and it’s changed my view and perception on life! Good luck to all those trying to get pregnant. It’s a beautiful journey!

  1. Great tips! I fell pregnant by complete surprise with my first baby and so thought that falling pregnant a second time would be easy but that definitely was not the case! It took us just over a year to conceive and I eventually learnt that looking after myself, taking time for myself and trying not to stress over the situation really helped I think! xx
